This film was actually the first horror movie I ever watched... well, technically I was forced to by my older cousins when I was 13. It left me thoroughly traumatized at the time, which is funny because now I absolutely love it. The Conjuring has become a classic I can always turn to. The film wastes no time in pulling us into its haunted realm, with just the right amount of dread to keep you on edge from the start. The opening sequence is a masterclass in horror, using unsettling cinematography, eerie and precise sound design, and a slow-building tension that never really lets you relax. Below, I break down the nine frames that make this introduction so effective, setting the stage for the supernatural chaos that follows.
