Reflecting on the post-production phase of my short film, I navigated a series of challenges and learning experiences that were instrumental in shaping the final product.
Organizing the Footage
After wrapping up the shoot, the first step was organizing the raw footage. Since the scenes were filmed across two locations on different days, I began by sorting the clips into folders, one for the café scenes and another for the drum sequence. This helped streamline the editing process and ensured I didn’t waste time hunting for clips later.
Editing Process
Given the tight schedule, I selected Cap-Cut for its user-friendly interface and efficient workflow, allowing me to manage tasks such as clip organization, sequencing, and the application of effects without unnecessary complexity. The editing process was streamlined, focusing on essential elements to convey the narrative effectively. One of the key challenges was executing the match cuts between the café and the drum scenes. Thanks to my pre-production planning and shot list, the transition came together quite smoothly. However, not every experimental idea made the final cut. For instance, I tried incorporating a vertigo effect for the drum sequence to enhance the energy, but it didn’t look as clean as I hoped. Instead, I settled on keyframing slow zooms and camera movements to simulate dynamic motion, since I didn’t have a gimbal and didn’t want to risk shaky shots.

Another significant challenge was syncing the various angles of the drum performance. With so many different shots to work with, ensuring all the movements aligned perfectly with the audio was time-intensive. Some clips were off-beat, so I had to adjust the speed curve to get everything in rhythm. While I managed to align everything eventually, the process was tedious.
Sound Design and Foley
All sound for the project was constructed during the post-production phase. This included the drum beats, café ambiance, clock ticks, and more. I relied heavily on foley sound effects and supplemented the rest with resources from Envato Elements. The drum audio, in particular, required significant work due to the multiple angles and complex syncing process.

The voiceover was another challenge, it still sounded unnatural to me, more like a recorded monologue than authentic dialogue. This is an area I hope to improve upon in future projects. Despite this, I made sure to juxtapose the lively drum sequence with the stillness of the café scenes to emphasize the contrast between the two realities.
Color Grading and Visual Aesthetic
One of my goals was to emphasize the stark contrast between the café and the drum solo sequences.
Café Scenes: Inspired by The French Dispatch, I leaned into warm, bright tones to convey the mundane yet visually appealing atmosphere.
Drum Solo: The drum sequence was intentionally graded with cool, dark tones to create a dramatic and immersive atmosphere. I adjusted the shadows and highlights to enhance the spotlight effect, making the transition from reality to imagination striking.
Technical Hiccups and Problem-Solving
Post-production wasn’t without its share of set backs. At one point, my footage and editing files became corrupted, leading to a minor panic moment. Luckily, I was able to recover most of the files and continued working. Audio glitches also popped up frequently, likely due to the sheer number of layers I was handling. However, I powered through, constantly saving my progress and troubleshooting as needed.
Reflection
The post-production phase was a comprehensive learning experience, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and problem-solving. Each challenge provided an opportunity to develop skills and enhance the final product. Moving forward, I aim to refine my approach to sound design and explore more advanced editing techniques to further elevate the quality of my work.
This phase underscored the critical role of post-production in bringing a film to life, transforming the raw footage of an idea into an actual reality.
